History

Sanger is located along the cattle trails where drovers traveled through Texas to markets in the north. The city was established in 1886 as stop on the Santa Fe Railway and named by Santa Fe in honor of the Sanger family, who owned stores in Waco and Dallas.

The town was laid out on land owned by Elizabeth Huling. The F. M. Ready family, the first to settle in Sanger, arrived in October 1887, the same year as the first locomotive.   A state highway connected Dallas to Sanger by 1920 and Interstate 35 connects the Dallas and Fort Worth metropolitan areas to Sanger today. The black, waxy soil of the area   continues to grow wheat, oats, maize, millet, and cotton. Horse farms for the breeding and training of registered stock are located in the area along with cattle ranches.

Historical structures are located throughout the city. The downtown area includes a collection over 20 historic structures from the 1900-1920's including the Wilfong Building featured to the right. Residential structures from the same time period are located along Bolivar Street and in the area west of downtown including the structure below.
